I was ambivalent about Titus Groan, I quite liked Gormenghast, but Titus Alone lost all the goodwill the first two books earned. The second, Gormenghast, was published in 1950 while the third, Titus Alone, was published in 1959, three years after he stared to suffer from Parkinson's. Sadly, it wasn't written by Peake; he died in 1968. I've also finished the Gormenghast novels. This four-episode mini-series covers the first two books of the series, Titus Groan and Gormenghast. I've re-read the trilogy, Gormenghast, Titus Groan and Titus Alone, every few years and joy of joy my children love them too. The Gormenghast trilogy is an oddly-shaped animal. The Gormenghast series, which is often wrongly called a trilogy but was in fact intended to be a longer series, followed the path of Titus Groan from his birth, as heir to a crumbling medieval castle, to his encounters in a modern world of skyscrapers and inventions. It is a world in which ritual is a living thing that demands constant obedience from its citizens – not least from Titus Groan, the 77th earl of Gormenghast who must assume his role of responsibility.
